How to compare two-person kayaks
The advertised weight capacity is a limit for everything aboard, not a suggestion for passenger weight alone. Add both paddlers, the weight of any child or dog, drinking water, safety equipment, seats and dry bags. Leave an operating margin instead of planning to sit right at the stated maximum. Compare usable legroom and seat adjustment, because two boats with similar lengths may have very different passenger layouts.
Consider where you actually paddle. A wide recreational tandem is different from a narrow touring tandem intended to maintain speed and direction in open water. Check empty hull weight and the number of people needed to load it onto a vehicle. A boat you cannot move safely may be the wrong boat regardless of its on-water qualities.
Questions to answer before ordering
- Can the seating arrangement handle two adults comfortably, or is the second position designed for occasional use?
- Does the manufacturer specify a total load, maximum occupant load, or both?
- Is there room for the required personal flotation devices, rescue gear and dry storage?
